If your child has lost, or is about to lose, a baby tooth too early, MyoKids Dental in Weybridge provide custom-made space maintainers to hold space for the adult tooth.
Baby teeth are often underestimated and do much more than just help your child chew and speak – they guide permanent adult teeth into their correct positions. If your child loses a tooth due to injury, infection, or extraction, leaving it untreated can lead to crowding or crooked teeth, as surrounding teeth may gradually drift into the empty space. Space maintainers prevent this from happening by preserving the gap.
MyoKids, part of MyoDental, is an award-winning private children’s dental team in Weybridge, with a dedicated floor for children’s dentistry and orthodontics.
Our paediatric dental team are experts in placing space maintainers and can assess your child’s bite, jaw development, adult tooth position and future orthodontic needs before recommending the best next step.
On top of this, our teams provide the patience and reassurance that children’s extractions require, on a dedicated, fun, friendly, and colourful floor designed specifically for them.
MyoKids Dental provides fixed (cemented) or removable space maintainers made of metal or plastic to help your child develop the healthiest possible bite and avoid the need for braces later.
Not every child who loses a baby tooth will need a space maintainer. Booking a consultation at MyoKids Dental lets us assess adult tooth position, spacing, bite, and jaw growth before making a recommendation.
Removable space maintainers are like small appliances that you can remove for cleaning and are typically suitable for older, more responsible children. But it also depends on the missing tooth, the bite and how well they manage wearing it.
Fixed space maintainers attach to the teeth and stay in place until the dentist removes them when the adult tooth is ready to emerge. It’s often the most recommended route for younger children because it doesn’t rely on compliance.
Space maintainers work by applying mechanical pressure to baby teeth, stimulating resorption that dissolves the roots. This gradual process creates a passage for permanent teeth and encourages them to erupt in the correct position within the jaw.
Whether fixed or removable, your child’s space maintainer is custom-made and will be inspected during dental check-ups at MyoKids Dental to track adult tooth eruption. When X-rays reveal the tooth underneath is ready to erupt, we’ll remove the space maintainer.

My young son had struggled with other dentists and we had experienced numerous failed attempts to have required treatment completed elsewhere due to his anxieties. Our experience with MyoDental has been incredible. The care taken from all the staff to understand our circumstances, welcome him, make him feel at ease, build trust, etc. has been beyond our hopes and expectations. Michael's ability to communicate clearly during his appointments, address and empathise with my son's concerns, and encourage him to allow the treatment to be completed has been fantastic. Would very highly recommend, especially for any parents who have young children who are anxious of visiting dentists.Posted on Google![]()

We highly recommend Myodental, especially Dr Marshall’s expertise in holistic orthodontics. Our daughter, 11 at the time, had top and bottom overcrowding as well as an impacted canine. We were advised previously to remove 4 healthy teeth before braces, which we were quite reluctant to proceed with. Luckily, we found Dr Marshall who meticulously put together the best treatment plan for our daughter, including a Schwartz palatal expander (and without any unnecessary teeth extractions). 24 months later - a wide, beautiful, perfect smile. We are extremely happy with the results! Many thanks to the whole team!Posted on Google![]()

I was more than happy to travel all the way from Dorset for every appointment for my daughter. When you start doing research into the dental industry, it soon becomes apparent that not all professionals are created equal! I wanted to bring my daughter here because Michael is one of the few who truly takes in the bigger, holistic picture and not just 'straightening' teeth. He understands the importance of airway, bone formation, and over-all health. It was no surprise to me that MyoDental even have people travelling from abroad for Michael's services. Absolute professionalism and 5-star service from the team the whole way. My daughter loved going to her appointments!Posted on Google![]()

Delighted - four months on I have straight and tastefully whiter teeth. The process was surprisingly straightforward once you had got used to having the retainers in your mouth. You can see progress almost immediately. And the end result was impressive given that teeth start to meander when you get older. Michael is a delight to work with and his team patient. Their pricing is also transparent so there were no hidden charges which it always appreciated. Many thanks. P.s. my bite in back in the right place for the first time since I was a teenager.Posted on Google![]()

I had a hygiene appt today with Nicola and she was fantastic. I haven't had teeth so clean, with stains gently removed from coffee etc., in a long time. She was helpful and knowledgeable and took the time and care required to get my teeth in great shape, without causing me discomfort. I rarely think to leave reviews but I was so impressed with Nicola that I was motivated to take the time to do so.Posted on Google![]()

I had very bad overcrowding of my teeth, and I visited several clinics across London where everyone wanted to remove two teeth from the bottom to straighten them, which didn’t feel right to me. When I found Dr. Marshal, he was the only one who suggested expanding the jaw using ALF, with no need to remove any teeth. The whole treatment was excellent. Dr. Marshal was always kind and explained everything in detail. I felt very comfortable throughout all my appointments. The result is amazing - straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Thank you, I am very grateful for my smile! As a bonus, I also have a better jawline.Posted on Google![]()

I popped into MyoDental just to make a general enquiry and not only did I come out with some useful advice, but a hygienist appointment made for me two hours later. Very happy with the appointment and was very appreciative to the staff who didn't mind my fussy baby being in tow! It was a very welcoming practice and I plan to return.Posted on Google![]()

Dr Marshall was amazing fixing my son’s chipped tooth after 3 years and many refusals from others claiming he is too young to have it done. His first reaction was “what, so I can smile again?!” 🥹 Thank you, Dr Marshall for making this happen, your expertise and approachable made this experience a bliss.
A space maintainer is a small dental appliance used when a baby tooth is lost too early. It helps hold the space open so the adult tooth underneath has room to come through.
Your child may need a space maintainer if a baby tooth has been lost early due to decay, infection, trauma, or extraction, and nearby teeth could drift into the gap.
No. It depends on your child’s age, which tooth was lost, how close the adult tooth is to erupting and whether nearby teeth are likely to move. We will assess this before recommending treatment.
A space maintainer should not be painful. Your child may notice it at first, but it should feel comfortable once they get used to it. We check the fit carefully and review it over time.
Your child may need to wear it until the adult tooth comes through or until the dentist decides it is no longer needed. Regular reviews are important.
Not always. A space maintainer does not straighten teeth, but it can help preserve space and reduce the risk of future crowding or eruption problems.
If a space maintainer is needed but not placed, nearby teeth may move into the gap. This can reduce space for the adult tooth and may increase the need for orthodontic treatment later.
Yes. MyoKids Dental has a dedicated children’s floor, gentle communication, a tell-show-do approach and safe sedation options available when needed.
