Safe Sedation for Kids

Dental sedation for children in Surrey

MyoKids Dental in Surrey offers paediatric-led dental sedation options for anxious and phobic children who need more complex care or have additional medical, sensory or neurodivergent needs in a dedicated children’s setting.

The go-to Surrey dental practice for children’s sedation

Our Surrey dental practice brings together three things parents should look for when choosing sedation dentistry for children: paediatric experience, sedation expertise and a child-focused environment.

Why parents choose MyoKids for children’s sedation

While many dental practices in Surrey can be kind to children, few combine a dedicated, colourful children’s floor with toys, an experienced paediatric dentist, and an IACSD-accredited sedation provider with consultant-level anaesthesia experience.

For children who are too anxious for treatment, cannot sit still, have strong gag reflexes or have additional medical or neurodivergent needs, MyoKids Dental is a reassuring first choice for safe sedation pathways.

Types of sedation

In most cases, children do not need to be put to sleep. We use conscious or inhalation sedation, which keeps your child awake but relaxed and responsive throughout. The sedation helps them feel calmer, more relaxed and more settled, without the fear, panic or trauma that sometimes comes with dental treatment.

For children over 6, we can use inhalation sedation (happy air or laughing gas), which involves a carefully controlled mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide, breathed in through a small, comfortable nose mask. This method helps children to feel relaxed, floaty and slightly drowsy. They can still talk, respond and follow simple instructions.

For older children (13+), intravenous (IV) sedation can be used for specific complex procedures, which involves placing a small needle in the vein to deeply relax suitable teens. They will remain awake, relaxed and fully able to respond to questions or instructions. They will generally feel sleepy and might not remember the procedure.

When we might recommend dental sedation

While some children need gentle reassurance to get through treatment, others may need a little more help. We offer:

  • Sedation for baby root canals and pulp therapy
  • Sedation for children’s fillings
  • Sedation for children’s extractions
  • Sedation for impacted wisdom teeth
  • Minor oral surgeries such as frenectomies/biopsies
  • Scale and polish

 MyoKids Dental offers sedation for:

  • Phobic or anxious children who are scared of the dentist and cannot complete treatment.
  • Neurodivergent children who may find certain sounds, lights, textures or sensations overwhelming.
  • Medically complex children who need extra planning around their history, medication, or previous care.

My young son had struggled with other dentists and we had experienced numerous failed attempts to have required treatment completed elsewhere due to his anxieties. Our experience with MyoDental has been incredible. The care taken from all the staff to understand our circumstances, welcome him, make him feel at ease, build trust, etc. has been beyond our hopes and expectations. Michael's ability to communicate clearly during his appointments, address and empathise with my son's concerns, and encourage him to allow the treatment to be completed has been fantastic. Would very highly recommend, especially for any parents who have young children who are anxious of visiting dentists.

We highly recommend Myodental, especially Dr Marshall’s expertise in holistic orthodontics. Our daughter, 11 at the time, had top and bottom overcrowding as well as an impacted canine. We were advised previously to remove 4 healthy teeth before braces, which we were quite reluctant to proceed with. Luckily, we found Dr Marshall who meticulously put together the best treatment plan for our daughter, including a Schwartz palatal expander (and without any unnecessary teeth extractions). 24 months later - a wide, beautiful, perfect smile. We are extremely happy with the results! Many thanks to the whole team!

I was more than happy to travel all the way from Dorset for every appointment for my daughter. When you start doing research into the dental industry, it soon becomes apparent that not all professionals are created equal! I wanted to bring my daughter here because Michael is one of the few who truly takes in the bigger, holistic picture and not just 'straightening' teeth. He understands the importance of airway, bone formation, and over-all health. It was no surprise to me that MyoDental even have people travelling from abroad for Michael's services. Absolute professionalism and 5-star service from the team the whole way. My daughter loved going to her appointments!

Delighted - four months on I have straight and tastefully whiter teeth. The process was surprisingly straightforward once you had got used to having the retainers in your mouth. You can see progress almost immediately. And the end result was impressive given that teeth start to meander when you get older. Michael is a delight to work with and his team patient. Their pricing is also transparent so there were no hidden charges which it always appreciated. Many thanks. P.s. my bite in back in the right place for the first time since I was a teenager.

I had a hygiene appt today with Nicola and she was fantastic. I haven't had teeth so clean, with stains gently removed from coffee etc., in a long time. She was helpful and knowledgeable and took the time and care required to get my teeth in great shape, without causing me discomfort. I rarely think to leave reviews but I was so impressed with Nicola that I was motivated to take the time to do so.

I had very bad overcrowding of my teeth, and I visited several clinics across London where everyone wanted to remove two teeth from the bottom to straighten them, which didn’t feel right to me. When I found Dr. Marshal, he was the only one who suggested expanding the jaw using ALF, with no need to remove any teeth. The whole treatment was excellent. Dr. Marshal was always kind and explained everything in detail. I felt very comfortable throughout all my appointments. The result is amazing - straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Thank you, I am very grateful for my smile! As a bonus, I also have a better jawline.

I popped into MyoDental just to make a general enquiry and not only did I come out with some useful advice, but a hygienist appointment made for me two hours later. Very happy with the appointment and was very appreciative to the staff who didn't mind my fussy baby being in tow! It was a very welcoming practice and I plan to return.

Dr Marshall was amazing fixing my son’s chipped tooth after 3 years and many refusals from others claiming he is too young to have it done. His first reaction was “what, so I can smile again?!” 🥹 Thank you, Dr Marshall for making this happen, your expertise and approachable made this experience a bliss.
