Myofunctional therapy near me providers

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), guided by our trained professionals and orofacial myologists, uses non-invasive exercises to train the muscles in the face, mouth, and tongue to improve nasal breathing, correct resting tongue posture, and develop an efficient swallow.

Why choose MyoKids for myofunctional therapy?

With an entire floor dedicated to children’s dentistry and orthodontics, MyoKids Dental in Surrey helps children feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

Parents choose MyoKids because our assessments go beyond tooth position. We assess breathing habits, tongue posture, swallowing patterns, lip seal, oral muscles, jaw growth, and long-term orthodontic needs to identify why teeth are crooked and recommend the right treatment pathway.

Myofunctional therapy treatment for infants & children

Myofunctional therapy is planned around your child’s habits, age and orthodontic development. Some children may benefit from a focused exercise programme, while others need therapy alongside Myobrace, tongue-tie treatment, and functional appliances.

Breathing retraining

Mouth breathing can affect tongue posture, lip seal, sleep quality, jaw development, and how adult teeth come through. Breathing retraining can encourage nasal breathing, reduce open-mouth posture and support better tongue position.

Tongue posture exercises

Healthy resting tongue positions support jaw development, arch width, and nasal breathing, and posture exercises help children's tongues rest in the right place when they are not speaking, eating, or swallowing. They are especially important after tongue-tie release treatment.

Swallowing exercises

Incorrect swallowing patterns can put pressure on the teeth and affect bite development, and myofunctional therapy can help children develop better swallowing patterns and reduce tongue-thrust habits so the tongue, lips, and cheeks work together more effectively.

Lip seal & facial muscle exercises

Lip seal exercises strengthen muscles around the mouth to help children who naturally rest with their lips apart, mouth breathe, or have poor oral muscle tone. Exercises support oral muscle balance, support nasal breathing, and keep lips together at rest.

Guide to myofunctional therapy

Concerned about your child’s mouth breathing, tongue posture, swallowing pattern, snoring, tiredness, poor posture, or early signs of orthodontic problems? Book an assessment with our Myofunctional providers in Surrey today.

Myofunctional therapy involves a programme of exercises that retrain the tongue, lips, cheeks, and facial muscles. Myofunctional therapy aims to help your child breathe through their nose instead of their mouth, rest their tongue in the correct position, swallow properly, and keep their lips together at rest.

Developing these habits matters because the tongue and facial muscles press on the teeth and jaw every day, and when they don’t work properly, they can contribute to narrow arches, crowding, open bites, mouth breathing, and relapse after orthodontic treatment.

Your child may benefit from an assessment if they have:

  • Mouth breathing, snoring or tiredness
  • Concentration problems
  • Crooked teeth, narrow arches or early crowding
  • Poor tongue posture or tongue thrust
  • Incorrect swallowing
  • Lips apart at rest

During an assessment, our paediatric dentists will assess breathing habits, tongue posture, lip seal, swallowing pattern, facial muscle function, bite development, and any links with orthodontic or tongue-tie concerns. We will then explain whether myofunctional therapy, Myobrace, functional appliances, or monitoring may be the most suitable treatment pathway.

Exercises depend on your child’s needs but will typically focus on nasal breathing, tongue position, swallowing, lip seal and oral muscle coordination. They are usually simple and repeated at home. Parent support is important because children need consistency to turn exercises into habits.

Treatment time depends on your child’s habits, age, motivation, and wider orthodontic needs. Some children may need a short focused programme, while others may need longer support alongside Myobrace, tongue tie release or orthodontic treatment.

Myofunctional therapy may be recommended before tongue-tie release to prepare the muscles, or after treatment to help the tongue learn better movement and function. This is especially useful if tongue-tie has restricted tongue movement, making it harder for a child to lift their tongue, rest it correctly, swallow properly, or breathe comfortably through their nose.

Tongue tie release can improve movement, but exercises can often be important when the tongue needs to relearn how to work properly after being restricted.

Myofunctional therapy is often integrated with Myobrace treatment or orthodontics. For example:

  • Myobrace: Does not solely move teeth; it focuses on correcting habits that contribute to crooked teeth, narrow jaws, and bite problems later. Myofunctional therapy supports Myobrace treatment by training the tongue, lips, cheeks, and breathing patterns. At MyoKids Dental, we may use myofunctional therapy before, during, or after Myobraces to help children build better habits and improve long-term stability.
  • Orthodontics: Braces work best when the muscles around the teeth support the result. Poor oral habits like mouth breathing or tongue thrust can keep putting pressure on the teeth and jaws, and myofunctional therapy can help improve these habits, which affect long-term tooth position and bite development.

My young son had struggled with other dentists and we had experienced numerous failed attempts to have required treatment completed elsewhere due to his anxieties. Our experience with MyoDental has been incredible. The care taken from all the staff to understand our circumstances, welcome him, make him feel at ease, build trust, etc. has been beyond our hopes and expectations. Michael's ability to communicate clearly during his appointments, address and empathise with my son's concerns, and encourage him to allow the treatment to be completed has been fantastic. Would very highly recommend, especially for any parents who have young children who are anxious of visiting dentists.

We highly recommend Myodental, especially Dr Marshall’s expertise in holistic orthodontics. Our daughter, 11 at the time, had top and bottom overcrowding as well as an impacted canine. We were advised previously to remove 4 healthy teeth before braces, which we were quite reluctant to proceed with. Luckily, we found Dr Marshall who meticulously put together the best treatment plan for our daughter, including a Schwartz palatal expander (and without any unnecessary teeth extractions). 24 months later - a wide, beautiful, perfect smile. We are extremely happy with the results! Many thanks to the whole team!

I was more than happy to travel all the way from Dorset for every appointment for my daughter. When you start doing research into the dental industry, it soon becomes apparent that not all professionals are created equal! I wanted to bring my daughter here because Michael is one of the few who truly takes in the bigger, holistic picture and not just 'straightening' teeth. He understands the importance of airway, bone formation, and over-all health. It was no surprise to me that MyoDental even have people travelling from abroad for Michael's services. Absolute professionalism and 5-star service from the team the whole way. My daughter loved going to her appointments!

Delighted - four months on I have straight and tastefully whiter teeth. The process was surprisingly straightforward once you had got used to having the retainers in your mouth. You can see progress almost immediately. And the end result was impressive given that teeth start to meander when you get older. Michael is a delight to work with and his team patient. Their pricing is also transparent so there were no hidden charges which it always appreciated. Many thanks. P.s. my bite in back in the right place for the first time since I was a teenager.

I had a hygiene appt today with Nicola and she was fantastic. I haven't had teeth so clean, with stains gently removed from coffee etc., in a long time. She was helpful and knowledgeable and took the time and care required to get my teeth in great shape, without causing me discomfort. I rarely think to leave reviews but I was so impressed with Nicola that I was motivated to take the time to do so.

I had very bad overcrowding of my teeth, and I visited several clinics across London where everyone wanted to remove two teeth from the bottom to straighten them, which didn’t feel right to me. When I found Dr. Marshal, he was the only one who suggested expanding the jaw using ALF, with no need to remove any teeth. The whole treatment was excellent. Dr. Marshal was always kind and explained everything in detail. I felt very comfortable throughout all my appointments. The result is amazing - straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Thank you, I am very grateful for my smile! As a bonus, I also have a better jawline.

I popped into MyoDental just to make a general enquiry and not only did I come out with some useful advice, but a hygienist appointment made for me two hours later. Very happy with the appointment and was very appreciative to the staff who didn't mind my fussy baby being in tow! It was a very welcoming practice and I plan to return.

Dr Marshall was amazing fixing my son’s chipped tooth after 3 years and many refusals from others claiming he is too young to have it done. His first reaction was “what, so I can smile again?!” 🥹 Thank you, Dr Marshall for making this happen, your expertise and approachable made this experience a bliss.
