Functional Appliances

Guide jaw growth before braces are needed

MyoKids Dental in Weybridge offers functional appliances to help guide jaw growth and support a healthier foundation for future orthodontic treatment.

Specialised orthodontic braces to correct severe bite misalignment

Functional appliances are used during a child’s growth phase to improve how the upper and lower jaws meet when bite problems are linked to growth.

Why choose MyoKids for functional appliances?

At MyoKids Dental in Surrey, dentists like Dr Marshall and Dr Kalia may recommend functional appliances before fixed braces or clear aligners to support jaw development, correct bite issues, and improve facial balance as part of a broader orthopaedic and orthodontic treatment plan.

With an entire floor dedicated to children’s dentistry and orthodontics, parents choose MyoKids because we assess jaw growth, bite development, facial balance, oral habits and long-term orthodontic needs before recommending the right appliance or treatment pathway.

Functional appliance treatment at MyoKids

Functional appliances are an early Phase 1 treatment, typically followed later by fixed braces, that use natural forces from the facial and chewing muscles to encourage healthier jaw growth, bite development, and tooth alignment.

Removable functional appliances

Often recommended for children with developing overbites or protruding upper teeth, removable functional appliances help guide jaw growth in growing children and are removed for eating, brushing and sport. Wear time depends on your child’s treatment plan.

Fixed functional appliances

Typically recommended for children who need reliable, consistent treatment, fixed functional appliances are attached to the teeth and work continuously to guide bite correction. Because they are fixed in place, they work continuously and are useful when compliance may be difficult.

Twin block appliances

As one of the most commonly used functional appliances for children with a developing overbite or lower jaw that sits too far back, twin block appliances use upper and lower removable appliances that work together to guide the lower jaw into a better position.

Guide to functional appliance treatment

Functional appliances are orthodontic devices that guide jaw growth and improve bite relationships, usually recommended while children are still growing. They can either be removable or fixed depending on the case.

  • Helps guide jaw growth and bite development
  • Often recommended for overbites and protruding teeth
  • Can improve how the upper and lower jaws meet
  • Protruding front teeth and overbites
  • Lower jaw sitting too far back
  • Bite development problems and poor jaw relationships
  • Class II bite patterns and facial profile concerns

Unlike braces, which focus on moving teeth, functional appliances focus on how the jaws meet, encouraging better jaw position rather than correcting misalignment alone.

Treatment often takes about 6-12 months, depending on your child’s age, bite, and how consistently they wear the appliance. Some children need shorter phases before braces, while others may benefit from longer treatment plans if their bite is more complex. During your child’s orthodontic consultation, we will explain the likely treatment time.

Functional appliance treatment should not be painful, but children may feel pressure or tightness when they first start wearing the appliance and as they get used to it. Speech may feel different at first, and eating may need some adjustment depending on the appliance.

Wear time depends on the appliance type and your child’s treatment plan. Some removable appliances are worn most of the day and night; others are worn mainly at night. Fixed appliances stay in the mouth and work continuously.

Treatment costs depend on your child’s bite and assessment findings; however, parents can expect costs to start at £600, with an orthodontic consultation costing £80. Flexible finance is available up to 60 months, with 12 months being interest-free.

My young son had struggled with other dentists and we had experienced numerous failed attempts to have required treatment completed elsewhere due to his anxieties. Our experience with MyoDental has been incredible. The care taken from all the staff to understand our circumstances, welcome him, make him feel at ease, build trust, etc. has been beyond our hopes and expectations. Michael's ability to communicate clearly during his appointments, address and empathise with my son's concerns, and encourage him to allow the treatment to be completed has been fantastic. Would very highly recommend, especially for any parents who have young children who are anxious of visiting dentists.

We highly recommend Myodental, especially Dr Marshall’s expertise in holistic orthodontics. Our daughter, 11 at the time, had top and bottom overcrowding as well as an impacted canine. We were advised previously to remove 4 healthy teeth before braces, which we were quite reluctant to proceed with. Luckily, we found Dr Marshall who meticulously put together the best treatment plan for our daughter, including a Schwartz palatal expander (and without any unnecessary teeth extractions). 24 months later - a wide, beautiful, perfect smile. We are extremely happy with the results! Many thanks to the whole team!

I was more than happy to travel all the way from Dorset for every appointment for my daughter. When you start doing research into the dental industry, it soon becomes apparent that not all professionals are created equal! I wanted to bring my daughter here because Michael is one of the few who truly takes in the bigger, holistic picture and not just 'straightening' teeth. He understands the importance of airway, bone formation, and over-all health. It was no surprise to me that MyoDental even have people travelling from abroad for Michael's services. Absolute professionalism and 5-star service from the team the whole way. My daughter loved going to her appointments!

Delighted - four months on I have straight and tastefully whiter teeth. The process was surprisingly straightforward once you had got used to having the retainers in your mouth. You can see progress almost immediately. And the end result was impressive given that teeth start to meander when you get older. Michael is a delight to work with and his team patient. Their pricing is also transparent so there were no hidden charges which it always appreciated. Many thanks. P.s. my bite in back in the right place for the first time since I was a teenager.

I had a hygiene appt today with Nicola and she was fantastic. I haven't had teeth so clean, with stains gently removed from coffee etc., in a long time. She was helpful and knowledgeable and took the time and care required to get my teeth in great shape, without causing me discomfort. I rarely think to leave reviews but I was so impressed with Nicola that I was motivated to take the time to do so.

I had very bad overcrowding of my teeth, and I visited several clinics across London where everyone wanted to remove two teeth from the bottom to straighten them, which didn’t feel right to me. When I found Dr. Marshal, he was the only one who suggested expanding the jaw using ALF, with no need to remove any teeth. The whole treatment was excellent. Dr. Marshal was always kind and explained everything in detail. I felt very comfortable throughout all my appointments. The result is amazing - straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Thank you, I am very grateful for my smile! As a bonus, I also have a better jawline.

I popped into MyoDental just to make a general enquiry and not only did I come out with some useful advice, but a hygienist appointment made for me two hours later. Very happy with the appointment and was very appreciative to the staff who didn't mind my fussy baby being in tow! It was a very welcoming practice and I plan to return.

Dr Marshall was amazing fixing my son’s chipped tooth after 3 years and many refusals from others claiming he is too young to have it done. His first reaction was “what, so I can smile again?!” 🥹 Thank you, Dr Marshall for making this happen, your expertise and approachable made this experience a bliss.

Functional appliances are usually used while children are still growing. Suitability depends on your child’s age, growth stage, bite and orthodontic needs.

Functional appliances can help with overbites, protruding front teeth, lower jaw position, jaw imbalance and bite development problems.

No. Functional appliances guide jaw growth and bite development, while braces mainly move teeth into straighter positions.

Some children may still need fixed braces or clear aligners after functional appliance treatment for final tooth alignment.
