Orthopaedics & Orthodontics

Guide jaw growth and straighten teeth together

MyoKids Dental in Weybridge provides combined orthopaedic and orthodontic treatment to correct jaw discrepancies, improve bite development, and straighten children’s teeth.

Correct jaw discrepancies & straighten teeth

At MyoKids Dental in Surrey, Dr Marshall and Dr Kalia can guide jaw growth and skeletal orthopaedic development while your child is still growing, and, once the jaw structure is balanced, follow up with orthodontic treatment to move teeth into straighter positions.

Why choose MyoKids for combined treatment?

MyoKids Dental is a fun, colourful dental practice in Weybridge with a dedicated children’s dentistry floor, specialist paediatric dentists, and an award-winning team with decades of experience in dento-facial orthopaedics & orthodontics.

Parents choose MyoKids because we look beyond crooked teeth. We assess jaw growth, facial balance, bite development, airway habits, oral muscles, and long-term orthodontic needs before recommending the right treatment pathway.

How combined treatment works

Combined treatment is usually completed in two phases.

Phase 1: Orthopaedics

Typical timeline: 6-18 months

Phase 1 treatment begins by guiding jaw bone growth and skeletal development while your child is still growing. Treatments can include Myobrace, functional appliances, or expansion appliances to improve jaw position, arch width, and bite balance before considering orthodontic treatment. Common goals of phase 1 include creating space for adult teeth, supporting better facial balance, reducing the need for extractions later, and improving overbites, underbites, or crossbites.

Phase 2: Orthodontics

Typical timeline: 6-24 months

Phase 2 focuses on moving, aligning, and fine-tuning the teeth's final positions after the skeletal relationships have improved. Common orthodontic treatments include fixed braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners like Invisalign to move teeth into their correct position, with common goals of refining smile aesthetics, straightening crowded teeth, aligning rotated teeth, closing gaps, and improving the final bite.

Orthodontic assessment £80

Appliances used in combined treatment

Depending on complexity, your child’s treatment plan may combine appliances and treatments based on their age, growth stage, bite, and alignment needs.

Here’s what we offer at MyoKids Dental and how they can be used in your child’s orthopaedic and orthodontic treatment plan:

  • Myobrace may help correct oral habits such as mouth breathing, poor tongue posture, and incorrect swallowing.
  • Functional appliances may be used to posture the jaw forward and improve how the upper and lower jaws meet.
  • Expansion appliances may widen narrow arches and create more space for adult teeth.
  • Fixed braces may be used after growth guidance to straighten teeth more precisely.
  • Clear aligners may suit older children and teens who need final alignment with a more discreet, removable option.

My young son had struggled with other dentists and we had experienced numerous failed attempts to have required treatment completed elsewhere due to his anxieties. Our experience with MyoDental has been incredible. The care taken from all the staff to understand our circumstances, welcome him, make him feel at ease, build trust, etc. has been beyond our hopes and expectations. Michael's ability to communicate clearly during his appointments, address and empathise with my son's concerns, and encourage him to allow the treatment to be completed has been fantastic. Would very highly recommend, especially for any parents who have young children who are anxious of visiting dentists.

We highly recommend Myodental, especially Dr Marshall’s expertise in holistic orthodontics. Our daughter, 11 at the time, had top and bottom overcrowding as well as an impacted canine. We were advised previously to remove 4 healthy teeth before braces, which we were quite reluctant to proceed with. Luckily, we found Dr Marshall who meticulously put together the best treatment plan for our daughter, including a Schwartz palatal expander (and without any unnecessary teeth extractions). 24 months later - a wide, beautiful, perfect smile. We are extremely happy with the results! Many thanks to the whole team!

I was more than happy to travel all the way from Dorset for every appointment for my daughter. When you start doing research into the dental industry, it soon becomes apparent that not all professionals are created equal! I wanted to bring my daughter here because Michael is one of the few who truly takes in the bigger, holistic picture and not just 'straightening' teeth. He understands the importance of airway, bone formation, and over-all health. It was no surprise to me that MyoDental even have people travelling from abroad for Michael's services. Absolute professionalism and 5-star service from the team the whole way. My daughter loved going to her appointments!

Delighted - four months on I have straight and tastefully whiter teeth. The process was surprisingly straightforward once you had got used to having the retainers in your mouth. You can see progress almost immediately. And the end result was impressive given that teeth start to meander when you get older. Michael is a delight to work with and his team patient. Their pricing is also transparent so there were no hidden charges which it always appreciated. Many thanks. P.s. my bite in back in the right place for the first time since I was a teenager.

I had a hygiene appt today with Nicola and she was fantastic. I haven't had teeth so clean, with stains gently removed from coffee etc., in a long time. She was helpful and knowledgeable and took the time and care required to get my teeth in great shape, without causing me discomfort. I rarely think to leave reviews but I was so impressed with Nicola that I was motivated to take the time to do so.

I had very bad overcrowding of my teeth, and I visited several clinics across London where everyone wanted to remove two teeth from the bottom to straighten them, which didn’t feel right to me. When I found Dr. Marshal, he was the only one who suggested expanding the jaw using ALF, with no need to remove any teeth. The whole treatment was excellent. Dr. Marshal was always kind and explained everything in detail. I felt very comfortable throughout all my appointments. The result is amazing - straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Thank you, I am very grateful for my smile! As a bonus, I also have a better jawline.

I popped into MyoDental just to make a general enquiry and not only did I come out with some useful advice, but a hygienist appointment made for me two hours later. Very happy with the appointment and was very appreciative to the staff who didn't mind my fussy baby being in tow! It was a very welcoming practice and I plan to return.

Dr Marshall was amazing fixing my son’s chipped tooth after 3 years and many refusals from others claiming he is too young to have it done. His first reaction was “what, so I can smile again?!” 🥹 Thank you, Dr Marshall for making this happen, your expertise and approachable made this experience a bliss.

Does your child need combined treatment?

Your child may benefit from an assessment if their orthodontic problem involves both jaw development and tooth position.

Common signs include:

  • Narrow arches and crowded teeth
  • Protruding front teeth or overbite
  • Underbite or crossbite
  • Lower jaw sitting too far back
  • Adult teeth erupting in the wrong position
  • Difficulty biting comfortably

If you’ve been advised to wait for braces, it might be worth getting a second opinion from our paediatric dentists. Braces move teeth, but they don’t guide jaw bone growth the way orthopaedic treatment can. If your child has a skeletal bite problem, waiting until their adult teeth have emerged might make it harder to correct later.

Early orthopaedic treatment can improve the foundation, so later braces or aligners may be simpler, shorter, or more predictable where suitable.

FAQs

It is a two-phase approach that guides jaw growth first, then straightens the teeth afterwards, where needed.

No. Orthopaedic treatment focuses on jaw growth, skeletal development, and correcting the bite. Braces focus on moving teeth into straighter positions.

Combined treatment is usually considered while children are still growing, often from around age 6 onwards, depending on development, bite and orthodontic needs.

Some children still need fixed braces or clear aligners after orthopaedic treatment for final tooth alignment.

In some cases, guiding jaw growth and creating space earlier may reduce the need for extractions later, but this depends on your child’s assessment.
