A child may need a tooth extraction if a tooth is badly decayed, infected, broken, traumatised, overcrowded, blocking an adult tooth or cannot be saved with a filling, crown or root treatment.
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic before treatment. Sedation options are also available for children who are nervous or for more complex extractions.
Sometimes. Depending on the extent of decay or infection, we may recommend a filling, crown, pulpotomy, or baby root canal. We usually recommend extraction when there’s no chance to save the tooth.
A simple baby tooth extraction is usually quick (typically 30-60 minutes). More complex cases may take longer.
Many children rest for the remainder of the day after an extraction. We will advise based on the treatment, whether sedation was used, and how your child feels afterwards.
Soft, cool foods are usually best at first. Avoid hot drinks, hard foods, straws and vigorous rinsing until your dentist says it is safe.
A space maintainer may be recommended if a baby tooth is removed early and nearby teeth are at risk of shifting into the gap before the adult tooth comes through.
Children’s tooth extraction fees depend on the tooth, complexity and whether sedation or oral surgery support is needed. We need a check-up before we can confirm the fee.
